The 90 Zone Pinpoint airport security scan walk through metal detector is a device used to detect the presence of metallic objects concealed on a person. It consists of two independent systems: a transmitter and receiver. The transmitter emits electromagnetic waves at different frequencies in order to penetrate clothing and body tissue. The receiver measures the reflected wave by detecting changes in its amplitude and phase.
The transmitter emits energy at a frequency of 2 MHz, which is within the range of human hearing (20 Hz-20 kHz). The energy is modulated using a 20 kHz square wave with a duty cycle of 1/8; this causes the transmission frequency to vary between 1.5 MHz and 3.125 MHz over time. This modulation creates sidebands that are centered on multiples of 20 kHz (40 kHz, 60 kHz, 80 kHz, etc.). Each sideband carries an identical copy of the original signal; this allows for cancellation when these two signals are combined back together after reflection from metal objects. The resulting signal has an amplitude proportional to the distance between the object being tested and its surface reflector; this allows for detection even when objects are buried deep inside clothing pockets or placed underneath layers of clothing fabric material thicknesses which attenuate electromagnetic waves by absorption or reflection losses caused by impedance mismatches
